Garbage Disposal Jammed? A Simple Homeowner’s Guide to Unjamming It Safely

18/Nov/2025

Does your garbage disposal produce a humming sound when you flip the switch? Is the motor running but the blades aren’t spinning? These are possible indicators of a jammed garbage disposal. While it might seem overwhelming to the average homeowner, unjamming a garbage disposal can be done safely with the right steps. It’s advisable to resolve the issue as soon as you notice it to prevent bigger problems, such as motor damage or complete failure. If simple troubleshooting doesn’t address the issue, it’s best to seek professional help from a local plumbing repair service.

Here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Wichita, we know a thing or two about garbage disposals. With our decades of experience servicing all types of disposals, we understand what needs to be done to fix all kinds of disposal problems. Our knowledgeable and experienced plumbers in Wichita, KS are always available to help you fix a jammed disposal or any other issue with the appliance.

Turn Off the Power First

Before you do anything else, the most important step is to turn off the power. Never attempt to clear a jam while the disposal is connected to electricity. Flip the wall switch to the “off” position, and if your model plugs into an outlet under the sink, unplug it. Some homeowners even go a step further and turn off the breaker as an added precaution. This ensures the disposal cannot start accidentally while you’re working on it.

Inspect the Inside of the Disposal

Once the power is safely off, take a flashlight and look down into the disposal. If you can clearly see the object causing the jam, use pliers or tongs to remove it. Never reach in with your fingers, even when the power is disconnected. The blades inside a disposal aren’t sharp like knives, but they can still cause injury, and the chamber’s tight edges pose risks as well. If the lodged object is difficult to grasp, gently shifting it with the tool may free it enough for removal.

Use the Hex Key to Manually Free the Jam

For jams deeper inside the mechanism, most disposals come with a simple solution: a hex key, often stored under the sink or attached to the unit itself. Look for the small hex-shaped opening at the bottom of your disposal. Insert the key and turn it back and forth. This action manually rotates the grinding plate and helps loosen whatever is stuck inside. You may feel resistance at first, but with a little patience, the obstruction usually gives way.

Reset and Test the Disposal

After you’ve cleared the jam, locate the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. This button often pops out when the unit has overheated or shut down due to a blockage. Press it firmly until you hear a click. Once the disposal is reset, restore power by plugging it back in or turning on the breaker. Then run cold water and flip the switch to test it. If it runs smoothly and without unusual noises, the jam is successfully cleared.
